My Story of Planting GraceLife Church

After a year and a half assessment process with Acts 29, I’ll officially be a member this week, making GraceLife Church an Acts 29 church. I wrote this story for the Acts 29 website about planting the church and thought you might enjoy the read.

By the year 2000, I’d been in full-time traveling ministry for six years. Growing up in the charismatic movement, I was a sought-after worship leader and speaker and had a ferocious passion for evangelism. I was the poster boy for spiritual disciplines and “revival,” yet I found my spiritual life strangely distant from the Lord.

Others may be put off by what seems to be the trendiness of the whole thing. But when understood, the ideas are revolutionary and powerful, though not new. What’s an “Elder-Led” Church?

I’ve never been a fan of the one-rock-star-and-1000-minions model of local church leadership. I’ve seen too many churches and leaders suffer from it. And I see Paul the Apostle establishing councils of elders in the churches he planted (Acts 14:23). Read more →

Community on a Mission

“Every day they continued to meet together…and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:46-47)

Part of the gift of the gospel is the loving family of the church, and the miraculous power to sustain that loving community (Galatians 5:22-23). Jesus didn’t just die to give us a personal relationship with Him, but to assemble a people that would shine His glory to the nations. He’s called us to be “community on a mission.” Read more →

The Miracle of Community

We live in a day when there are many who love God and do not love “the church.” I get it. A good part of Christendom has become more about politics, power, and product than people. Don’t get me wrong, people are important to the big machine, but mostly in the sense that they can add to the programs or the attendance record. If I weren’t a Christian, I’d be standing there with the rest of them scratching my head at the bizarre sub-culture, pseudo big-business that is western Christianity. Read more →
